One of the first methods of defense against network or application attacks, firewalls inspect network traffic that passes through it. Firewalls allow or deny this traffic to be passed through based on a security rule set that has been developed and deployed. Many firewalls also have VPN features. Traditionally, firewalls have been located at the perimeter of a network to provide a line of defense between the internet and internal informational assets. It has become even more prevalent for firewalls to be installed between different network segments within an overall organizational information network architecture. |
